1. AHA Course Descriptions / Fees

Health Focus of Southwest Virginia administers American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Basic Life Support (BLS) and/or First Aid courses for the public, as well as private companies and organizations. American Heart Association course standards and training materials include the most recent medical advances and techniques in CPR, BLS and First Aid. All instructors are AHA approved and receive regular standards training.

Course fees include the student textbook, instructor fee and a two-year certification card. Certification cards are mailed to the students within thirty (30) days of course completion. Verification prior to the reciept of cards can be made through Health Focus of SWVA.

American Heart Association course standards and training materials were revised in 2001, 2003 and 2006 to include the most recent medical advances and techniques in CPR, BLS and First Aid. All Health Focus instructors are AHA approved and receive regular standards training.

*Note: Micro-Masks are required for several of the courses provided by Health Focus of SW VA. Costs of the micro-masks are included in the per student costs. Micro-masks are available for purchase through Health Focus, to students, at a cost of $11.50 each.

2. CPR, First Aid & BLS Course Formats

a. Heartsaver AED

Fees/Duration: (2-1/2 hours - Adult Only - $57) (3-1/2 hours - Adult/Child/Infant - $70 per student)

(Intended for workplace, firefighter, police, security and airline personnel, as well as famliies with AED access)

Teaches adult, infant and child CPR, use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED), use of barrier devices (micro-masks) in CPR, relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO) and first aid for choking. Includes signs of cardiac arrest, heart attack and stroke in adults.

b. Healthcare Provider BLS (Basic Life Support)

Fees/Duration: (4-1/2 - 5 hours) $80 per student

Does include the ‘two-man rescuer’ technique.

(Intended for physicians, nurses, residents, emergency medical responders (Paramedics and EMTs), nurse practictioners and physician’s assistants, Therapists (respiratory, physical and occupational), medical or nursing students in training and medical assistants)

Teaches CPR for victims of all ages including ventilation with a barrier device (micro-masks), a bag-mask device (manual resuscitator) and the use of oxygen. Includes use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBOA).

c. Healthcare Provider BLS Renewal (Basic Life Support)

Fees/Duration: (3 hours) $65 per student

An abbreviated version of the Healthcare Provider BLS course described above for those individuals requiring a renewal course prior to the expiration of their current HCP-BLS certification.

3. First Aid Course Formats

First Aid courses meet OSHA standards and are Intended for workplace and daycare personnel, firefighters, police, security and airline personnel, as well as the families and friends of patients at high risk for sudden cardiac death. Training modules provide lay rescuers the skills to effectively assess and manage acute illness and injuries in the critical moments prior to the arrival of professional rescuers.

a. Heartsaver First Aid

Fees/Duration: (3-1/2 hours) $42 per student

Contains four (4) modules of First Aid including; General Principles, Medical Emergencies, Injury Emergencies and Environmental Emergencies.

b. Heartsaver First Aid / Adult, Child & Infant CRR / AED & Environmental

Fees/Duration: (8 hours) $90 per student

Contains four (4) modules of First Aid including; General Principles, Medical Emergencies, Injury Emergencies and Environmental Emergencies. CPR modules include adult, infant and child CPR, use of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED), use of barrier devices (micro-masks) in CPR, relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (FBAO) and signs of cardiac arrest, heart attack and stroke in adults.
